The Astor House Hotel (Pujiang Fandian) is the only place in Shanghai offering dormitory accommodation. As such, it is often full, especially in the summer months so it is a good idea to call ahead and book a room if you can.

The Astor House is in a great location, just over Waibadu Bridge and Suzhou creek, and is a two minute walk from the Bund. Transport to and from the bus and train station is not bad, with a regular bus service going from the Bund every day.

This Shanghai hotel has some fairly crowded but clean dormitories and also some cheaper double and triple rooms on offer. The building itself is great, an old colonial building and formerly a much more glamorous hotel. Today, it's more like something out of a gothic horror tale - but atmospheric and fun nevertheless. There is a pleasant bar and restaurant on the premises and also a small shop.

If you want ultra-modern, go elsewhere. However, if you like hotels that have character and history, try the Astor. To find it by taxi, it helps to know that it is also called the Pujiang Hotel - and to have a print-out the name in Chinese characters.

It is hard to describe this hotel as it is rather unique. It is a very elegant old hotel from the heyday of Shanghai and so has a great deal of ambiance. The rooms are huge and nice and the hotel has many nice hsitorical features. Having said this it is not for everyone as it is not broadloomed and has wooden floors, old stucco and dark Victorian wood work in the hallways. English is pretty good in this hotel, rates are reasonable, food okay and the location very very good as it is almost on the Bund. I would recommend.

We stayed twice at the hotel in different sorts of rooms. The first stay in the Executive rooms was overal excellent, the main problkem being no Internet acces in the room - it took several attempts to get this fixed. The second tiem we booked a fifth floor mansard room but we told when we arrived that these were all full and we were offered what was supposed to be an equivalent room. This did not have the complimentary fruit ( no big deal) but there was no internet access, and thre was no view as the original room was supposed to have. And they tried to charge us both the deosit and room tax again! But it is in a superb position in Shanghai and very characterful.

The Astor is a beautiful Victorian hotel situated right on the Pu River. It is a 5 minute walk across the bridge to the Bund River Walkway and Heroes Park. The rooms are very nice with a computer in the Executive rooms. Breakfast consists of various Chinese items that were a bit overwhelming for breakfast. For a great place in a great city, this is an excellant choice.

A must when visiting Shanghai. Old fashioned yet modern in outlook and accommodation. Einstein, Charlie Chaplin, U.S. Grant, and B. Russell all stayed there. Excellent location across from the Bund, centre Shanghai opposite Russian consulate. The restaurant is expensive.

English comprehension of staff very poor, though they tried hard. Clothes drying line in shower recommended.
